Germany had been without armed forces since the Wehrmacht was dissolved following World War II. When the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949, it was without a military. Germany remained completely demilitarized and any plans for a German military were forbidden by Allied regulations.
Even the Federal Border Protection Force, a mobile, lightly armed police force of 10,000 men, was only formed in 1951.
However, after the project for a European Defence Community failed in the French National Assembly in 1954, France agreed to West German accession to NATO and rearmament.

Russian Red Army Rain Poncho Plashch Palatka

Plashch Palatka or Rain Poncho /Shelter

An important piece of kit, which offered rudimentary protection from the elements to the Red Army soldier.

Cloth the size of 180 cm x 180 cm Weight 1400 gr

It was a square in shape, measuring about 180x180 cms and made from a canvas water proof duck material with draw strings incorporated into one corner. The strings could be used to tie the cape across the shoulders and also to form a hood. Small toggles and holes along the front edges were used to fasten the cape up and an arm vent was incorporated into the right front. Each corner also had a leather grommet.
When issued the cape came with a 4 metre length of rope, two short wooden tent poles, one wooden and one metal stake, and when combined with other capes it could be made into a 2, 4 or 6 man tent shelter. Due to wear and loss the tents were more than often erected using sticks and branches cut locally.

Post war capes can be identified by the use of brass grommets, metal dished buttons instead of wooden toggles and two small straps sewn onto one corner, used to attach cape to the modern back pack. With a little effort post war capes can be converted to look like a wartime one. When not being worn the capes were carried rolled "horse shoe" fashion over the left shoulder.

The shovel blade had the original Russian Cyrillic markings removed by the Germans and we think a "H" on the blade is for Heer to be re-issued to German soldaten. No bluing on the blade and there are a good amount of nicks on the edge of the blade.The wooden handle is in very good condition, has a faint date "1911", someone initials and the normal nicks and has the "ball" at the bottom.

Genuine Soviet Afganistan War uniform backpack. Really scarce nowadays. I was very surprised to find several original backpacks in such an amazinig condition. Looks like they have been carefully stored for a long time. Even original paper documents are included!

It's not even really a backpack, but rather simplified webbing system, that is based on backpack.

RD-54 have many advantages, small flat dimensions, a simple, robust design.
