Description

Level 4 consists of a thin, windproof “wind shirt,” which is intended for use inside the system, though it can be worn as an outer layer. Generally it’s worn under other layers and helps retain 300% more heat than without a wind shirt. It is ideal in escape and evasion situations, as it’s very compact and can be rolled up and stuffed in a cargo pocket. It’s less durable than the Level 5 soft shell garments and not meant for high abrasion situations like low-crawling over rocks or work in which the wearer is getting into and out of vehicles with some frequency. It’s frequently worn as an under-layer beneath the soldier’s camouflage uniform and in helicopter use, or other situations with significant environmental wind.

PATAGONIA details below:

Lightweight, finely-tuned and warm, the Level 3A Jacket is a breathable, insulated shell for active endeavors; ideal as outerwear or insulation.

For gripping the tenuous holds of a Tuolumne classic one day and the outer poles on a San Francisco trolley the next, nothing beats the lightweight, breathable warmth of our Level 3A Jacket. We combined a sleek, wind-resistant nylon shell with heat-trapping, highly-breathable Polartec Alpha® insulation to keep you comfortable and warm in a wide range of conditions, whether you’re fully aerobic on an exposed ridge or just running late for your morning commute. Treated with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish, the Level 3A has a supple, next-to-nothing feel that glides effortlessly when layered with a shell on colder days. It insulates even when wet, dries extremely fast, and packs down to the size of a grapefruit. The full-length zipper has a storm flap for next-to-skin comfort and three zip-closing pockets (one chest, two handwarmers) hold the daily essentials. Elasticized cuffs and an adjustable elastic drawcord hem seal out the wind and cold air.

The Protective Combat Uniform (PCU) History

In 2002, a member of the Special Operations Forces made a call from a crater in the Hindu Kush, Afghanistan to the SOF Special Projects Team at the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center in Natick, Mass: "Send warm clothing."

Unfortunately for that soldier, but representing quite an achievement by the developers, the Protective Combat Uniform (PCU) was delivered, replacing the Lightweight Environmental Protection (LEP) system less than one year later. PCU is a 16 piece, 7 level clothing system that can be worn "layers-appropriate" for the mission, ranging from -50° to 40°F (-46°to 4°C).

Instead of finding existing military systems as a starting point, Richard Elder from the Special Projects Team looked to COTS (civilian off the shelf) outdoor gear. After taking recommendations from Master Chief Scott Williams and consulting with extreme alpinist Mark Twight, PCU block 0 was born. Adhering to the Berry Amendmant requiring the DoD to give preference to American produced products, Nextec's Epic, and Malden Mills' polar fleece were utilized. ORC Industries produced levels 4, 5 and 6. SEKRI produced levels 1, 2, 3 and 7. Other companies contributing to the military's PCU system include YYK (zippers), Travis (Materials), 3M (insulation and Melody Miller (design).

Patagonia Lelel 9 Jungle (HW)

Then, in 2009, Patagonia got their chance to take the lead on a clothing project for PM SSES who decided to develop a SOF Combat Uniform. This garment became PCU Level 9. They held a development event in El Paso, Texas, along with their Ability One partner, bringing in personnel from each of the SOF components to provide feedback on prototypes. This was very much a hands-on event, with multiple evaluations occurring as well as an early use of 3D laser scanning to determine sizes for the operators.

Patagonia’s Cyndi Davis was central in the development of that garment and someone SOCOM would continue to turn to for expertise in the ensuing years. The Patagonia team refined its initial concepts and turned the uniform into reality. Now, they also produce a jungle version of that uniform, called Level 9 HW.
