BiValve Pack Lid

The G-7000 lid combines a large front pocket, suited to holding 2-liter plus hydration systems, with a huge rear pocket, suited to all the other stuff you cram into your packs lid. The bivalve joint between the pockets makes the lid hold tight to the pack or your back. It also keeps the pockets from compressing when you reef the lid down on your pack. When needed, the bivalve lid converts to a slick daypack, with hydration features intact. Breathable 3D mesh shoulder pads reduce the daypacks weight and sweat factor.

Pick Up Bottom

For all the cool things the SpeedZip bottom can do, it's ironic that it can also just go away. Locking a pair of quick release buckles together inside the G-7000 inverts the SpeedZip bottom compartment up into the pack - creating the pick up.
You can use the pickup to shrink your G-7000, and just strap your sleeping pad there, or strap a duffle's worth of bear bag overload onto the pickup - ready to swing at camp. Is this the ultimate party pack or what?

Pockets:

The G-7000's back pockets are 24" long, narrow profile give the most pocket for the least bulk - good for keeping your load stable.
Side zips open wide to give you full access to any of your gear, long enough to be within 8" of anything in the pack, short enough to be easy to close.

G-7000
Packs from the People!
Made in the US

Sometimes you get to pick the load...

Sometimes the load picks you! When the fickle finger of fate has put you in the position of having to pack the big one - you need a G-7000. The G7's X-frame controls the biggest loads while maintaining ideal shape. The Lumbar Wrap and Outamatic framesheet then transfers that load with the lightest pressure possible.

The G-7000 shapes its load into a solid, non-sag whole with a complete wrap of Xply Cordura around the upper packbag and pockets. Anything in the packbag is accessible through a pair of #10 side zippers, and of course, the Speedzip bottom.

When you don't have a pack filling load (how'd that happen?) you can shrink the G-7000 with the cross compression straps, either across the sides, or snapped together across the back pockets for complete compression.

Or you could take up the bottom, inverting it up to the horizontal dividers' height and reducing the G-7000's volume by 20%. Why the concern with shrinking the G-7000? Because even with a great tool like this, you're working too hard - shrink it down and enjoy yourself.

G-7000 comes with custom fitting slip tool that lets you get the pack adjusted directly on your back, so you'll know you have a great fit. The Slip tool has all the info you need to get it right.

Mystery Ranch BDSB Backpack for US Navy Seals

From Mystery Ranch Website in 2004

Mystery Ranch BDSB (Big Dana's Special Blend)

Big D's Special Blend... A G7000 with a mission... This year we have been building BDSB packs to equip the U.S. Navy SEALs teams with the best heavy lift packs in existence. Now that we have fulfilled initial production requirements, we can offer these packs for sale to those who need a pack that would be overkill for normal use.

The unrivaled stability, comfort, and load control of the Outamatic X Frame made this the overwhelming choice for the SEAL's new pack. SEALs have used every type of pack over the last few years, looking for the one that could make a clear difference. We are proud that the G-7000 was selected as the commercial prototype of that pack. Using the same Outamatic X frame as the G6 and G7 packs, the BDSB is built to withstand a SEAL's level of (ab)use.

The (500d/210d) Xply Cordura main bag will withstand extreme cramming, and transfer that load to the MainFrame evenly. Twin #10 side zips let you access your gear easily, and with a low profile.

The BDSB's Color was chosen for overall low observability in desert, mountain, and shoreline environments. The light grey buckles require a special molding run, but are worth it, reducing the contrast seen by both IR and starlight imaging.

The BDSB fabrics are all DuPont cordura's of either 500d, (500d/210d) Xply, or 1000D. They all have a serious polyurethane layer of waterproofing inside, and a outer layer of Teflon HT to make sure your load stays as dry as possible.

The BDSB comes equipped with a 117 sized radio pocket that has many other uses, located next to your upper back. A removable divider helps section and shape the load, keeping the BDSB's shape as flat to your back as possible - as well as letting you shrink the packbag by 1500ci by locking up the bottom.

Two sets of lower straps and two sets of side straps let you easily deal with all the crap you have to strap on, no matter how awkward.

Down at the molded hipbelt Dana added a couple of sets of MOLLE compatible loops, for pockets you can reach one handed.

Many of these features can be seen in detail on the G7000 pages - please feel free to call or email questions. Special colors or patterns may be available on request.

One of the unchanging features of military life over the last 30(!) years, the ALICE pack system has defined a certain kind of pain for millions(!) of Americans.

Now, Dana Gleason has developed an ALICE compatible pack and frame system based on the principles that revolutionized internal frame packs for civilians and operators alike in the last decade.
Imagine less fatigue, fewer injuries, less broken or abandoned gear - all from a simple change of pack frame, already compatible with the largest pool of existing gear in the world! Rather than try and re-invent the way you're going to carry your gear, the NICE/Alice frame gives you the best carry possible in the Alice system envelope.

Dana's Nylinear Mainframe combines flexibly joined carbon/fiberglass stays with a nylon skin that defines their shape and stiffness.

Built to the same size as the Alice frame, the NICE frame keeps the load low on your back for head/helmet clearance. Unlike the Alice frame, the NICE frame uses Lumbar Wrap technology to put the load on your hips, not your shoulders. Even better, the NICE frame's Outamatic fit system adapts to your personal size and shape, with or without ballistic protection.

NICE frame adjusted short      NICE frame adjusted tall

NICE frame and Alice frame contrast...

The NICE and ALICE frames are similar in size and superficial layout of the frames structural members. This keeps them 100% compatible - but the similarities end there...

The NICE frame is fiberglass and carbon fiber, linked through impact absorbing joints.
A springy strip of 7075 grade aluminum shapes the outamatic fit. Built to hold the load to you, and moves with you.

Dimensions: 12 1/2" X 21"
Weight: 3lbs 14 oz

The NICE/Alice frame Bounces! on impact.
Sizing
The NICE frame easily adjusts between back lengths of 17" to 23" this corresponds to heights of 5'2 through 6'4. This lets us spread the load across your hips, back and shoulders while still providing ventilation - whatever your size, whatever your wearing.

Mystery Ranch's Lumbar Wrap Hipbelt system -
The most stable and comfortable hip belt system you can wear - fits easy, fits well, and fits with one pull on the buckle.

Close up of NICE frame lumbar wrap.

Load Control
The NICE frame has 2 horizontal and 2 vertical load control straps that anchor any packbag, even traditional ALICE packbags securely to your back no sway, no stagger.
The ALICE frame is 100% aluminum - rigid,
designed to hold the load away from your back.

Dimensions: 12 1/2" X 21"
Weight: 3lbs 10 oz

The ALICE system Bends or breaks under impact.

The ALICE frame - one size fits all when you're whole load is on your shoulders.

ALICE Padded Backband
It's better than nothing.

The ALICE frame has no load control; both ALICE packbags have 2 vertical straps

The difference this makes in comfort and performance has to be tried to be believed. The Mystery Ranch can make a 40 lb load feel like it isn't there, and a 60 lb load feel reasonable!

The NICE pack frame's shape and buckles makes it compatible with all alice pack bags and adds 3 sets of compression/overloading straps that let you keep the NICE frame and any ALICE pack bag perfectly stable on your back.

How Stable? Well, you can move with this system, not stagger, for starters.
The above image shows the NICE pack frame's Nylinear Mainframe with carbon/fiberglass stays exposed. The NICE frame uses carbon reinforced fiberglass for it's main framing material, laid out in a grid that can flex at it's intersections. This lets the NICE frame move with your body without sagging under the load.

Pack Files: Big D's 4900

Mystery Ranch debuted the Big D's 4900 pack on their website the second half of 2004, and it was the first proprietary pack offered for sale that was designed for their newly released NICE Frame. The extensive, full wrap PALS webbing is an uncommon feature for a Mystery Ranch bag and one that wasn't replicated on any subsequent Mystery Ranch offering. The so-called "Big D" lid appears to be the same model used on their BDSB (Big D's Special Blend) pack and was the forerunner to the Daypack Lid. The 4900 has a similar shape and style to some of the mid-2000s Kifaru tactical offerings, such as the ZXR, though I don't suspect them of being influenced by Kifaru's designs.

It's likely that only a small number of Big D's 4900 packs were sold. I was unable to find a price listed for the pack and have never seen one come up for sale in nearly a decade of buying and selling Mystery Ranch packs. This post on the Lightfighter Tactical Forum discusses some of the possible options available for the 4900 ("two pockets on the 'face' and PALS on the sides, a la Terraplane or BDSB, or an all PALS version as pictured"), which means at least a few packs must've been sold. The fact that they offered long pockets on the face with PALS on the sides leads me to believe that the 4900 may have evolved into the NICE 5000, a similarly sized bag that featured two front pockets, side PALS, and added a center zip down the face of the pack.

Description

Description and photos from Mystery Ranch website (2004).

Your basic toploading packbag, built to maintain a flat profile - positioning the 4400 c.i. main packs volume to let you stand as upright as possible (thin is in!). This kind of control - even with a big load - is made possible by the NICE frames broad load contact area - 250 sq.in. of flat packframe that the load is engaged with.

Extensive PALS web absolves the designer from responsibility for however you choose to set up you're pack, but a word to the wise - show a little restraint, and, use the compression straps - a tight load carries better than a floppy one.

The Big D lid is 500 c.i. in capacity, hydration compatible, and converts into a butt pack or cross shoulder bag.

The inner pack has PALS web covering the upper third of the frame side - essential for organization, especially with com gear - and a pair of Velcro sealed comports.

Bottom loading straps are built in and integrate with the NICE frame.

A Fit That's Perfect

So what is the Mystery Ranch, anyway? Dana Gleason and Renée Sippel-Baker have been designing and building backpacks since the mid-80's. By building their packs locally, in Montana, they were able to achieve a legendary level of quality and comfort. Steadily building, learning and improving their packs, they succeeded in building some of the best packs in the world. Today, Dana Design continues the tradition established by Dana and Renée as a division of K2, producing packs and tents around the world. Back in Bozeman in 1998, after many interesting adventures working for K2, Dana realized that he longed for the simple life of skiing and backpacking, and retired. The '98-'99 winter season was great; 70+ days skiing and riding. Then it happened. The vision of a new way to carry your load. Simple to use, your way. Able to adapt to any load by changing packbags. And a fit that's perfect. Nine months later, and it's 2000. The Mystery Ranch System has been born: 8 sizes and shapes of frames, 6 packbags. Everyone gets a perfect fit, and every pack fits every frame.

The Story

Call it enviro-recreo-techno-altruism, if you want, but this is a superior system that comes at a time when all other high-quality backpacks have long been on a plateau of sameness and complication. The Mystery Ranch System simply solves the problem of how to carry big loads comfortably. Simply is the key word. But it does more. The fact is, Dana would not be back in the business unless he could make a system like this one. In other words, this is not a déja vu or a flashback pack line. This is truly new. This is The Works. Built in the Gallatin Valley, where their families live, Dana and Renée are once again endeavoring to build the best packs in the world, with the best crew they've ever assembled.
