Mystery Ranch BDSB (Big Dana's Special Blend)
Big D's Special Blend... A G7000 with a mission... This year we have been building BDSB packs to equip the U.S. Navy SEALs teams with the best heavy lift packs in existence. Now that we have fulfilled initial production requirements, we can offer these packs for sale to those who need a pack that would be overkill for normal use.
The unrivaled stability, comfort, and load control of the Outamatic X Frame made this the overwhelming choice for the SEAL's new pack. SEALs have used every type of pack over the last few years, looking for the one that could make a clear difference. We are proud that the G-7000 was selected as the commercial prototype of that pack. Using the same Outamatic X frame as the G6 and G7 packs, the BDSB is built to withstand a SEAL's level of (ab)use.

So what is the Mystery Ranch, anyway? Dana Gleason and Renée Sippel-Baker have been designing and building backpacks since the mid-80's. By building their packs locally, in Montana, they were able to achieve a legendary level of quality and comfort. Steadily building, learning and improving their packs, they succeeded in building some of the best packs in the world. Today, Dana Design continues the tradition established by Dana and Renée as a division of K2, producing packs and tents around the world. Back in Bozeman in 1998, after many interesting adventures working for K2, Dana realized that he longed for the simple life of skiing and backpacking, and retired. The '98-'99 winter season was great; 70+ days skiing and riding. Then it happened. The vision of a new way to carry your load. Simple to use, your way. Able to adapt to any load by changing packbags. And a fit that's perfect. Nine months later, and it's 2000. The Mystery Ranch System has been born: 8 sizes and shapes of frames, 6 packbags. Everyone gets a perfect fit, and every pack fits every frame.
The Story
Call it enviro-recreo-techno-altruism, if you want, but this is a superior system that comes at a time when all other high-quality backpacks have long been on a plateau of sameness and complication. The Mystery Ranch System simply solves the problem of how to carry big loads comfortably. Simply is the key word. But it does more. The fact is, Dana would not be back in the business unless he could make a system like this one. In other words, this is not a déja vu or a flashback pack line. This is truly new. This is The Works. Built in the Gallatin Valley, where their families live, Dana and Renée are once again endeavoring to build the best packs in the world, with the best crew they've ever assembled.
