In 1940, during Second World War, the Permanent Active Militia was renamed the Canadian Army (Active), supplemented by the Non-Permanent Active Militia, which was named the Canadian Army (Reserve). The Army participated in the Korean War and formed part of the NATO presence in West Germany during the Cold War. In the years following its unification with the navy and air force in 1968, the size of Canada's land forces was reduced, but Canadian troops participated in a number of military actions with Canada's allies, including the Gulf War in 1991 and the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, as well as peacekeeping operations under United Nations auspices in various parts of the world.

Despite Canada's usual support of British and American initiatives, Canada's land forces did not directly participate in the Vietnam War or the Iraq War.

Canadian Waterproof Sniper Stealth Suit

Stealth Suit

Most of you are used to using waterproof breathable hardshells as an outer layer but snipers have to wear ghillie suits for camouflage purposes and are a bit shy about the accompanying characteristic "whish-whish-whish" noise of nylon outer garments. During the late 1980s British and Dutch snipers pioneered the use of the "Stealth Suit". Designed as an ultra lightweight waterproof breathable drop-liner garment that was designed to be worn under a ghillie suit or smock during inclement weather for example consider a British Army sniper in a Northern Ireland rural hide. If you think that the concept of the stealth suit is foreign to the US military, they were a component of SOCOM’s Battle Dress System, a forerunner to PCU in the early 1990s.

Our friends at CPGear have brought this concept over to North America with their Canadian made Stealth Jacket and Trousers. Weighing in at an unbelievably light weight of less than 14 ounces and packing down to a compact 3.5" diameter x 8" roll for the jacket, it can be stowed in most 1 quart canteen pouches. Due to its unique nylon tricot Gore tri-laminate construction the stealth suit also tends to be more breathable than garments with a taslan or supplex nylon face. At $140 Cdn for the jacket and trousers each (jacket and trousers sold separately) this is a bargain for a fully seam taped Gore-Tex garment. If you are a sniper, or recon type with an LRS/LRRP/RSTA organization, the Stealth Suit concept is definitely worth a look. But don’t let that limit you. If you are operating where space and weight are limiting factors, you should consider the Stealth Suit as a replacement for a bulky hardshell. You can slip it on under your uniform and preserve heat as well as keep your body dry.

Canadian Army KFS Kit Food Serving

Knife, Fork and Spoon (KFS) Set

KFS in use after WWII were the late war three-piece interlocking sets copied from the Germans. A newer design was produced in 1952 and this style is still being employed today.

I have attached a photograph of a 1966 dated M1950 Stove as well as some 1975 and 1988 dated KFS sets. The 1988 dated sets were manufactured in Japan.

The current issue KFS are made by Marathon in China. They also make the CF issue dive watch

Canadian Army Pattern 37 Water Bottle Carrier

The Canadian Government had a very extensive textile capability; and as a result many items of Pattern 37 Web Equipment were exported. Australia in particular, received vast amounts of Canadian equipment. This carried on until such time as the Australian Government itself began production from 1943 onwards.

The Australians produced a carrier, based on the standard Pattern 37 skeleton - however with a wider horizontal strap. This wider brace was fitted with two brass hooks, which provided the ability to fixing the water bottle carrier to the standard Pattern 37 waist belt. In keeping with this, much of the existing stock of water bottle carriers were modified to allow this same capability. This photograph clearly shows the extra web piece with two brass hooks, which facilitate the fixing of the waterbottle carrier to a standard Pattern 37 web belt.
