Introduction

It is fabricated of Army shade 106 olive green, water repellent treated, 7.25 ounce nylon duck.

It is designed to be attached to the belt by a hook and pile loop fastener, or to the back suspender shoulder strap hooks by D-rings and to the back suspender extension straps by hook and pile loop fasteners.

Description

The IRS parka has a roll-up hood with a visor and drawstring closure. There are armpit zippers for ventilation, a heavy full-length zipper in front covered by a storm flap that closes with snaps. The pockets are pass-through to inner garments. The elbows are reinforced and Velcro closures at the cuffs make a tight fit. The parka has inside buttons for attaching the CW coat insulating liner.

The IRS trousers have a draw-string at the waist, a center zipper, pass-through pockets, Velcro closures at the ankles, and long leg zippers for easy on-off. The seat and knees are reinforced.

Both the parka and trouser which comprise the Improved Rainsuit are constructed of the finest American-made fabrics and component parts. The outer shell fabric is waterproof and moisture vapor permeable which will release moisture from within the garment while at the same time maintain a waterproof barrier to the outside elements. All seams are heat taped to ensure waterproof integrity.

Material

The IRS is made of SympaTex, a lightweight breathable, waterproof material made by SympaTex Technologies GmbH. SympaTex is a nylon material that is pliable and moisture-vapor-semi-permeable. It resist external water while allowing perspiration or other moisture to transfer from inside to outside, thereby keeping the wearer dry and comfortable.

Label attached on the inside of garment to flap panel in back neck area.
Hood with a visor; hood drawcord shall extend beyond the tunnel 10 to 11 inches on both sides.
Bottom hem drawcord shall extend 8 to 9 inches on both sides.
Double closure storm protective front slide fastener with twin slider assembly.
Front insignia tab.
Snap fastener slide fastener protector.
Raglan style sleeves with back arm reinforcement patches.
Slide fasteners under each arm , for ventilation, covered by a welt.
Two lower pocket pass throughs with snap down flaps.
Wrist adjustment tabs with hook and loop closure.
Hook and loop tape at neck to permit roll up of hood.
Button-in liner panels and two button tabs at each sleeve bottom to interface with the standard field coat liner.

Trouser design and construction features:

Label attached and positioned next to seat seam, caught in waist tunnel seam of trousers.
Slide fastener front closure with a snap and drawcord at waist.
Inseam leg gussets with covered slide fastener closure with hook and loop ankle adjustment tabs.
Two front pocket pass throughs with snap down flaps.
Seat and knee reinforcement patches
Trouser drawcord, to extend 8 to 9 inches on both sides.

Initial fielding of the Improved Rain Suit (IRS) to high priority Army units began in Dec 1997, managed by Product Manager-Enhanced Soldier System (PM-ESS), Ft. Belvoir, VA. The IRS is issued one per Soldier in all units. The primary vendor was ORC Industries, Inc.

MARS Clothing System (Military Advanced Regulator System)

In 2004, Patagonia commenced work for a SOF customer on an environmental clothing system which was comprised of modifications to what was already in their commercial line. Leveraging their Regulator line of inner layers, this project was dubbed the Military Advanced Regulator System or MARS. Some garments remained the same as their commercially available counterparts but with a color change to Alpha Green, while other items were slightly modified with additions such as sleeve pockets. Later, many components of MARS were produced in Coyote.

History

The basic configuration consists of a belt, a shoulder harness and a number of individual pouches. Associated with the PLCE webbing system is a series of other similar load carrying equipment, individual items and rucksacks that are produced of the same materials and feature high interoperability.

The Russian military department adopted a regulated sample of a padded jacket for soldiers only in 1915. The cropped robe has proven to be very useful for trench life. At the same time, the first earflaps appeared in everyday life. They called them "Finnish hat". It was the Finns who came up with this model.

SOVIET ERA OF VATNIKS

After the overthrow of the tsar and the coming to power of the Bolsheviks, the production of quilted jackets dropped somewhat, and only a few years before the start of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet leadership began to dress the military and civilians in this type of clothing. The red army especially liked the new uniforms. Wadded jackets and trousers did not restrict movement at all, so it was convenient to go into a bayonet attack and move on skis in them.

Parka & Trousers, Wet Weather

The Parka, Wet Weather and the Trousers, Wet Weather together formed the rain suit that can be used as an alternative to the individual soldier's poncho. They first appeared in the 1950s under specifications that were revised in the 1970s and 1980s. The Parka and Trousers, Wet Weather were superseded by the Improved Rain Suit in the late 1990s.

Parka and Trousers, Wet Weather

The Nylon Twill Parka and Trousers, Wet Weather are fabricated from a plain weave nylon fabric coated on the outside with a layer of cross linked polyurethane and on the inside with layer of cross linked polyurethane. Originally an olive green garment set, later versions were produced in Woodland Camouflage.

The Wet Weather Parka has a regular sleeve construction, is mid-thigh in length with an attached hood. It has a full zipper front, velcro closures on each sleeve cuff and at the juncture between the front of the hood and the body of the Parka, slash-through pocket openings, drawcords in the hood facing opening, and an elastic drawcord at the bottom. The Wet Weather trousers are ankle length with drawcords in each leg hem, slash-through pocket opening, suspender loops, waist to crotch fly-front opening with no zipper, and a waist drawcord.
