First aid bag with 16 individual numbered pockets which close with Velcro closures. Versatile and flexible for a variety of purposes. Has a broad padded adjustable shoulder strap, carrying handle and three built-in straps on to the bottom to carry a poncho, blanket, pole-less litter, etc.) or whatever you may desire. Bag holds an amazing amount of supplies. The pockets are all labeled 1 through 16 so organization is a piece of cake. The bag is extremely well made according to Government specifications.


I rarely saw these bags in use during my 21 year Army career, but I served with a unit that used them as an ambulance trauma bag. The bag would be filled with items that an ambulance crew could use to assist the combat medic with patient treatment while casualties were being loaded into a Four Litter Ambulance (FLA). Since the bag was so light, it could also be left behind as a resupply bag for the field medic. One National Guard unit I worked with in Iraq used them solely as a resupply bag for the forward medics.

The back of the bag has the unit that this bag used to belong to. I bought this bag from a soldier that got the bag from a free issue lot while deployed to Iraq.

History


NEW COMBAT LIFESAVER BAG

As a result of new advances in trauma management and feedback from users in the field, the Army has updated the combat lifesaver (CLS) bag. The new CLS bag combines treatment recommendations from the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) panel as well as changes in the program of instruction for CLS providers. Due to the number and type of changes made to the components, the CLS bag now has a new NSN (National Stock Number), 6545-01-532-3674 and a new unit assemblage number, 1245.


The Common Table of Allowances (CTA) is updated to reflect these numerical changes. The long nomenclature of this CLS bag is listed as “MES Combat Lifesaver version 2005” to avoid confusion with the previous version, and is populated in the medical databases of Medical Services Information Logistics Systems (MEDSILS) and the Unit Data Repository (UDR).


Components of the new MES, with their corresponding NSN and quantity, are provided in the table below. It is important to note that although a Chitosan bandage is being authorized for inclusion in the Southwest Asia theater, it is NOT currently a component of the assemblage. Also, while the Medical Chemical Defense Materiel items of Atropine and Diazepam remain authorized in the UA and therefore listed, the assemblage will be fielded without those two items. This is to comply with the currently established centralized process for ordering these items. 


The new components, for ease of identification, are also listed in the “characteristics” field of MEDSILS and the UDR under the above NSN. Due to cost issues, the proposed bag in the assemblage 6545-01-537-0686, BAG, TC3, COMBAT CASUALTY CARE will not be fielded with the assemblage. The components will continue to be issued in the old bag, 6545-00-912-9870, CASE #3 10X4-1/2X18IN.

 

Hextend will remain a component of the CLS assemblage. This policy has been coordinated with the Office of the Surgeon General. That does not, of course, negate the unit surgeon’s authority to replace that fluid with a crystalloid as he deems necessary with regard to his/her CLS providers and the mission. USAMMA/DSCP will not build multiple CLS assemblages with different intravenous fluids. That substitution can be done at the local level. As of now, 03 April 2006, DSCP is filling orders for the CLS bag with the new components.


Information regarding the updates to the CLS bag will be communicated to the field in the following ways: via the USAMMA website and in the appropriate supply bulletin (SB). USAMMA will also try to disseminate via the AMEDDC&S website, appropriate email lists for division/brigade/battalion surgeons, TRADOC, and the AKO homepage. As a result of advances in trauma management and feedback from users in the field, the Army updated the combat lifesaver bag in 2005. Due to the number and type of changes made to the components, the CLS MES now has a new NSN 6545-01-532-3674 for the assembly.

The so-called "M-3 Combat Lifesavers Bag" is the CLS MES with National Stock Number (NSN) 6545-01-254-9551 for the fully assembled kit, or NSN 6545-00-512-9870 for the carrying bag alone. The nomenclature for the bag is "Case #3" and the size is 10 x 4-1/2 x 18 inches.

Due to cost issues, the proposed bag in the assemblage 6545-01-537-0686, BAG, TC3, COMBAT CASUALTY CARE will not be fielded with the assemblage. Mission and Capabilities:

a. Mission. This set contains medical supplies to provide immediate life saving care to battlefield casualties.

b. Capabilities. The combat lifesaver is a non-medical Soldier who is trained to provide critical, lifesaving care to wounded Soldiers in a tactical environment as a secondary mission. The recommended allocation of Combat Lifesavers is one per vehicle, and/or one per squad. The MES contains the consumable material to provide initial treatment for one severely wounded casualty. The set contains the medical material required for general and intermediate lifesaving first aid. It is designed to provide initial treatment to a wide range of battle injuries. The set provides material to initiate treatment for burn injuries, provide adjunct airway management, control hemorrhage, initiate fluid replacement for traumatic blood loss, and splint extremity injuries.

c. New Capability. The ability to control bleeding has been improved with the addition of three new components to the set; the Tourniquet, Combat Application, One-Handed, NSN 6515-01-521-7976; the Bandage Kit Elastic (Emergency Trauma Dressing), NSN 6510-01-492-2275; and the Bandage Hemorrhage Control, 4x4 sterile Chitosan Dressing, NSN 6510-01-502-6938. The capability of decompressing a tension pneumothorax has been added to the MES with the addition of the 14 Gauge 2.5” Catheter and Needle, NSN 6515-01-467-1335.

M5 Medic Bag


This rectangular canvas rucksack contains are large internal space for storing various assorted medical equipment. It has several inner pockets and ties to keep a M5 Aid bag secure

The M5 bag (the one here is a 1980's example) contained all the medical supplies a platoon would need. This example contains the M5 bag with assorted contents including the emergency surgical instrument set. The remainder is filled with bandages of various sizes. The long external pocket would have contained an emergency splint, and the two short ones were for other medical equpment that could be accessed easily. Usually the medic carried extra canteens attached to the sides of this pack.
