British Berghaus Cyclops SERAC Rucksack

Nomenclature

Rare Cyclops SERAC Rucksack

History

Nice and unusual Cyclops SERAC Bergen, a private purchase in the 1980's, having integral side pockets, ski slots, canvas body with original leather base, top pocket and early pattern snaps and buckles.

Rucksacks have always been a forte of Berghaus and in 1972 the first Cyclops appeared, probably one of the first in the world to have an internal frame and certainly one of the top ten best rucksacks ever produced.
Mick Tighe, a young Royal Marine Arctic Warfare Instructor in the 1970’s, was surprised to see that a lot of Marines had ditched their military issue rucksacks in favour of the Cyclops. Berghaus was awarded a contract to make military rucksacks as a result.
The Serac version of the rucksack seems to be little more than a variation of the original and would seem to date from around the same era.

History

Berghaus Rucsac History / Innovation

Berghaus began life in 1966 when two climbers, Peter Lockey and Gordon Davidson, took the first letters of their respective surnames and opened the specialist outdoor store LD Mountain Centre in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Not quite sure why but they named their range of innovative outdoor gear, Berghaus (mountain house in German) and so began several decades of success in the world of outdoor gear

In 1972 they began designing and manufacturing their own products for sale in their shop. They called their brand 'Berghaus' which is a literal translation of 'mountain house' in German.
Rucsacs were once bulky, uncomfortable pieces of equipment that hindered, not enhanced the climbing experience. Berghaus soon changed that.

The first Berghaus rucsacs, which included the Berg 172 and Berg 272 models, had external frames and basic single compartments. These more traditional sacs were followed two years later in 1972 by the truly revolutionary Cyclops rucsac – arguably the world’s first rucsac with an internal frame.

The Cyclops’ internal frame and extra padding made for a much more comfortable and climber-friendly rucsac, and helped it become one of the most popular rucsacs of all time. In fact, a version of the Cyclops – the Cyclops III – still features in today’s Extrem range of rucsacs.

In 1977 Berghaus became one of Europe's pioneer users of Gore-Tex® fabric, a new waterproof and breathable fabric.
This was followed in 1979 by the development of the Yeti Gaiter, whose distinctive rubber rands were initially made from old tractor inner tubes.
1980sIn the 1980s the Gemini jacket was introduced, and is still in production today; it allowed a walking jacket to have a zip-in fleece.
