Archaeopteryx Lithographica...

A hundred and forty million years ago a creature struggled to escape the hostile horizontal world. It
became lean and strong and developed into a magnificent climber. Then, driven by success and the gears of evolution, it developed the feather... and freedom

About ARC’TERYX (Jun 02 2002)

ARC’TERYX was founded over ten years ago with the idea of designing a better climbing harness. Motivated by trips into the British Columbia mountains and an absence of quality gear, we radically redefined existing technology to create truly exceptional products. The results were groundbreaking evolutions in harness, pack and outerwear technology. Throughout this journey we have maintained a commitment to making the highest quality, most innovative and superbly versatile gear available.

As we move forward, we’ve integrated new concepts into our packs, elevated our fabric technology and fused progressive ideas to fill current technological voids. With meticulous precision, we continue to develop gear at our pioneering Canadian factory. Taking inspiration from our prehistoric namesake, we’ve continued to look skyward, questing for dramatic departures from the evolutionary norm.

            DESIGN WITH INTENT

Founded by local climbers in 1989, Arc’teryx remains a gathering place of like-minded people. Our Design Centre is a hive, a hands-on think tank of active designers, materials experts, pattern makers and product developers who know what they want, how it will be used and why it has to work.

            Arc'teryx Drac Jacket

You have to go, and you have to go now. You don’t know what the job is yet, but you know it needs to be done quickly and effectively, and you know you’re going to do it. We recommend you take the Arc’teryx Drac Jacket with you.

Equipped with velcro patch, you can add your identification and IFF on the way. Made of enduring Burly™ Double Weave, the Drac is as tenacious as you are. If it’s hot, you’ve got pit zips to cool off without slowing down. If it’s cold, you’re already wearing a solid, breathable mid-layer. Either way, articulated joints allow a full range of motion, and you stay protected.

ARC’TERYX Equipment Inc. enters Snowboard / Freeride Apparel Market

(Vancouver, B.C.) - ARC'TERYX announced that it will present it's new apparel lineup at the upcoming winter shows in Spring 2000, SIA in March, ISPO in February and OR in January. The program will incorporate a number of the breakthrough technologies already proven in the very successful alpine apparel line. The lineup will include a full selection of outerwear and supporting fleece products as well as a backpack program incorporating classic ARC'TERYX quality and performance throughout. All of the products will be manufactured in Vancouver.

The apparel program has been under development for the last 2 years and the flagship outerwear component will use only 3 ply Gore-Tex® XCR™ fabrics combined with many other proprietary ARC'TERYX technologies. The quality, design and function of the garments will set new standards for the Snowboard/Freeride apparel industry. "Our products have always been built from the ground up learning from our experiences in the world famous backcountry of the Coast Mountains and Whistler Resort", says Jayson Faulkner V.P. Sales and Marketing. "The snowboard/freeride scene in Whistler has been amazing. We are blessed with arguably the best big mountain terrain and it has attracted most of the best riders in North America. This has created a very dynamic 'scene' which makes for a great place to test and design equipment."

            07 Feb 2001

ARC'TERYX uses a combination of fabric and construction technologies to create a series of Gore-tex® XCR™ clothing pieces that are like nothing else on the market. This line is streamlined and functional. Everything is done to decrease weight and bulk and increase freedom of movement and durability. By using a combination of lighter and heavier fabrics, durability in high wear areas is maintained, while creating a lighter, more comfortable garment. Construction methods, including the use of die cut Velcro, laminated cuffs, narrow gauge tape all contribute to the suppleness as well as the durability of Gore-tex® XCR™ jackets and pants. ARC'TERYX prides itself on the quality of construction of all of its products. At 12-16 stitches per inch, ARC'TERYX seams are among the strongest in the industry. The minimum 1/8" seam allowance allows the use of narrow seam tape, this means that garments can be shaped to fit ergonomically. Findings are powder coated to increase durability and ease of use. Finally, ARC'TERYX lamination technology contributes to making outerwear garments that are more breathable, more supple, and more abrasion resistant than anything else on the market.

            Logistic

We have designed the ultimate technical outerwear. Our goal is to engineer outerwear to fit and protect the body in action in hostile environments better than ever before: lighter, faster, stronger, with style. We have ignored the constraints of current techniques and materials, and developed revolutionary features and components that do not exist on any other garments. This outerwear is not "cut & sewn". It is sculpted and assembled. This is the line of technical outerwear that is universally regarded as the most advanced and innovative.

This is where it began. We started with a simple idea: Improve the climbing harness. Improve the fit. Improve the comfort. Improve the quality. Improve existing technology with a new way of thinking. We developed entirely new manufacturing techniques. We developed processes that had not been done anywhere in any industry. We sourced materials from around the world that had never been used for harnesses. We brought these elements together in a way that provided the strength and durability that hard climbing demands. This is VAPOR™ technology: superior form, materials, fit and quality. Still many years later, our harness design and technology have never been equaled.2001

            ARC’TERYX News

ARC’TERYX Equipment Inc. enters Snowboard / Freeride Apparel Market

(Vancouver, B.C.) - ARC'TERYX announced that it will present it's new apparel lineup at the upcoming winter shows in Spring 2000, SIA in March, ISPO in February and OR in January. The program will incorporate a number of the breakthrough technologies already proven in the very successful alpine apparel line.

This will be a major launch initiative for Gore-Tex® as we move more aggressively into the snowboard/freeride markets. Says Steve Schuster, Fabrics Business Leader, "We are so clearly recognized as the leading waterproof/breathable worldwide in outdoor and mountaineering. ARC'TERYX is recognized worldwide as a leader in these areas as well, it makes for a perfect partnership to present truly new products to a very demanding user group."

Faulkner said the line, tentatively called the WhiteLine, will include 5 styles of Gore-Tex® XCR™ 3 ply jackets, two models of pants, a full technical fleece program (8 styles), technical wool laminate pieces (4 styles) and a base layer program. "Although the line was designed primarily as a boarding line, the features and performance will be ideal for skiers as well. I think the skiers in particular will be coveting this program as much as the boarders!". Like other products from ARC'TERYX, the WhiteLine collection will be aimed at the snowboarder who is a technical user, backcountry, big mountain rider, the rider who appreciates the exceptional performance, quality and design of these products.

A number of features have been developed for the specific needs of snowboarders. Reinforced side panels, different textiles that are a little beefier for riding in the trees, are a couple of examples. "We are transferring many of the technologies and proprietary design features from our Alpine/Mountaineering program to the WhiteLine program. For example, we still are spec'ing the best fabrics available; tight weave, high tenacity, maximum construction fabrics just like we have in our current mountaineering/alpine program." We have seen the success of our alpine program in key technical markets like Whistler, Chamonix, St. Anton and Jackson Hole. In all of these great mountain resorts both boarders and skiers have been moving more towards technical garments as they have found existing snowboard and ski branded products lacking in performance for big mountain riding and skiing.

"We have looked very closely at our existing program to see what would make sense for the backcountry boarder. The backcountry alpinist and backcountry boarder both want a lot of the same things. They want their gear to be lightweight, compactable, very durable, keep them dry and comfortable and have all of the features work easily and effectively with no hassles." ARC'TERYX will be introducing a full lineup of snowboard specific backpacks as well to support the clothing. Like the clothing, the new packs will use many of the technologies and leading design features of their current technical climbing and mountaineering pack line up. There will be 5 models of packs in all from a small 1500 cu. In/23 litre model to a larger 2500 cu. In./4 litre size. ARC'TERYX is also in the process of building a team of riders. "We have signed Brian Savard (no. 3 ranked rider in the world by Snowboarder Mag) as the first member of our snowboard team. He personifies the rider we are targeting. He does everything well whether it's in the halfpipe or ripping big mountain faces. But he loves the backcountry the most. Brian feels the future is riding big mountain faces, pulling hard technical half pipe moves. We want to be the gear supplier for those riders." Another great addition to the team was Rob Morrow. Rob needs no introduction as one of the great all around snowboarders in the industry and the founder of Morrow Snowboards. Both these great athletes are in addition to the established freeski team that includes dominant big mountain skiers likeTom Wayes, John "Foon" Chilton, Jia Condon, to name a few. They are all very well known skiers that have numerous first descents to their names.
