Library and Archives

The Archives and Library house a unique collection of natural history books, journals and archives, with a focus on subjects relating to the Museum's collections and research.

Library

The Library contains over 20,000 volumes, including a number of rare and antiquarian books, and over 100 current periodicals. The majority of the collection comprises works in geology and entomology, with smaller representations for zoology, mineralogy and general natural history.

Archive

The Archives hold a wide range of manuscripts, photographs and maps relating to the Museum's specimen collections, and several archives from some of the most notable naturalists in English history, including William Smith, William Buckland, John Phillips and J O Westwood. The majority of the collection represents the professional work of those associated with the Museum and/or the University around the period 1830–90. The Archives also include material related the history of the Museum and its building.
