History / Summary
The 1972 Pattern Webbing was intended to replace the 58 pattern webbing, but never got beyond user trials. It was made from PU-coated nylon to counter the Soviet NBC capability with a general look closer to a load-bearing vest. It was designed to be used in wide variety of environments such as jungles, deserts and was configurable for use, ranging from short-duration jungle patrols to general infantry use.

Thanks for getting the "pattern" correct: the British MoD incorrectly refer to this as "1975" pattern - when that trials set was COMPLETELY different (what they then had to call "Pattern 1958 Mk2"). Many collectors are consequently calling this set "1975 pattern", incorrectly, in my opinion. Researching these sets, even the MoD confuses the two different sets as ONE set.
ReplyDeleteYours is a nice set made by "Irvin Aviation Corporation" or "Irvin Airchute Company" - basically, "Irvin-GQ" - of Wales. There's a small SUIT Sight pouch which attaches to a front adjustment strap of the Yoke and a pair of Utility Straps that attach to the Yoke rear adjustment straps: I've only seen the latter on the complete set I bought. The field pack is near identical to the later "GS Rucksack".
The only Pattern 1972 items adopted as standard are the S6 Respirator Case and the horrendous courlene "Working Belt". I've not yet ascertained if the nylon Rifle Sling was '72 or '75 pattern. We certainly had some in our stores. The non-standard issue items adopted were the Rucksack SAS (issued to SAS and Airborne Forces as standard) and the Lightweight Combat Pack, SAS (as seen in the famous pic of "Andy McNab" in "Bravo Two Zero").
