Pattern 85 Entrenching Tool Pouch

British webbing a 1985 trials PLCE right-hand ammo pouch. This was part of the 1985 trials set of nylon webbing that would be compatible with the forthcoming SA80 assault rifle and replace the 1958 Pattern webbing set. The 1985 trials webbing set would eventually become the 1990 Pattern PLCE webbing set and they share various construction features. This example of the right-hand pouch is in very good used condition. The only issue worth mentioning is that the male Fastex clip designed to fit the bayonet scabbard has been removed. This could be replaced by cannibalising the clip and retaining strap from a 1990 Pattern PLCE bayonet scabbard

For the advanced collector of British webbing equipment; a rare opportunity to acquire a set of 1985 trials PLCE webbing.

A quick history lesson: It had long been intended to replace cotton 1958 Pattern webbing with an NBC decontamination-friendly webbing set made of synthetic materials and in the 1970's butyl '1972 Pattern' and nylon 1958 Pattern webbing had been trialled, but not adopted. As part of the planned switch over from the 7.62mm L1A1 self-loading rifle to the 5.56mm SA80 assault rifle, an experimental set of nylon webbing was designed in the mid-1980's to carry the longer and thinner M16 type 5.56mm magazines as well as a US / European type folding entrenching tool. This would finally evolve into the 1990 PLCE set.

Here we have an example of the 1985 trials set consisting of a belt, yoke, left and right pair of ammunition pouches, two utility pouches and an entrenching tool carrier. Similar in some regards to the 1990 PLCE set, it has a complex belt with both 1958 Pattern and 1990 PLCE features, a yoke that attaches directly to the belt via 'C' hooks and pouches that fasten with snaps rather than quick-release tabs.

This is the original OG nylon daysack carrying yoke introduced for troop trials during 1985-86 and intended to carry one OG PLCE rucksack/Bergen side pouch by attachment to the PLCE clips and only manufactured in small numbers until replaced by the improved production OG PLCE during 1989. This style of daysack yoke was not subsequently adopted for production. Manufactured from green-drab nylon material with padded shoulder sections and green nylon straps with plastic PLCE male attachment clips.
