History

Danish soldiers now get a new modular personal protection system from the American company "TYR Tactical", which can be adapted to the individual's size, function and need for protection in a given situation.


Protective vest M / 12 

Protective vest M / 12, which the new system has been dubbed, protects against fragments, small-calibrated handguns and powerful pressure waves.

The new protective vest will be delivered at the same rate as the newly purchased helmet M / 12 “Cobra”, which means that INTOPS units, including ISAF 15, will receive the TIR at the beginning of January 2013, while personnel in operational units in domestic structure is expected to receive the vest in the first half of 2014.


User Test

The user test was carried out with Bornholm units, supported by personnel from the Air Force. The purpose was, through a prolonged continuous load, to test comfort, functionality, agility, influence on the delivery of sieved fire with small arms. In other words, to test the use of the individual equipment under conditions that reflect the soldier's terms on the battlefield.

In the actual test process, three systems were included which were tested at the same time as the testing of the new helmet M / 12 (COBRA) in order to assess the overall influence of the system on the soldier's agility.

During a continuous process, the user test was carried out by:

* Passage through obstacle courses
* Prolonged march
* Creep and crawl in terrain
* Passage of an agility course in urban buildings
* Implementation of various shooting programs

The participating soldiers finally completed a questionnaire which was equally included in the overall evaluation. Overall, the test results showed that TYR Tactical was the best.

The new protective vest is both modular and size-based, which means that the individual soldier can adapt the system to their own size, function, situation / threat, task and personal preferences. The module structure also makes it easier to obtain a good bearing comfort that helps to preserve the soldier's combat power.

Feathures

Protective vest M / 12

Consists of the following parts supplied in Multicam:

• A slightly fragmentation vest in which the projectile protective plates can be mounted. The lightweight vest can be worn during and outside the uniform.

• A Plate Carrier with MOLLE, in which the ballistic panels of the lightweight vest can be mounted together with the projectile protective plates. The Plate Career is used outside the uniform. "

• A protective belt with MOLLE with inlaid - and removable ballistic panel - providing the same protection as the fragmentation vest.

• A frame of the "X-frame" type that connects belt and plate carrier and transfers part of the weight load from the shoulders to the hip. This means, among other things, that the soldier should not lift all his equipment with his shoulders when he wants to bring his weapon into a shooting position. The X-frame is very movable and ensures that the Plate Career sits optimally on the upper body during movement.

• Protective plate that contains a ballistic panel and which is mounted at the bottom of the Plate Career and thereby protects the transition between the vest and the belt, so the stomach is also well protected.

• Shoulder pads that provide ballistic protection over the shoulder and which can be mounted on either the light vest or on the Plate Career.

• Ballistic collar that protects the neck from fragments and which is mounted on the Plate Career.

• Upper arm protection - shape seam after shoulder joint and mounted on shoulder protector.

• Thigh protection with MOLLE attached to the belt.

• Projectile protection plates for chest and back in different sizes, so that individual soldiers can more easily adapt the vest to their own size.

• Side protection plates that can be inserted into either the upper arm guard, in Plate Career or in the thigh guard. 

There are many different combinations in the West, so in the future, a number of standards will be prepared that will describe which combinations should be used when and by whom. Including who should have handed out the various part elements in Protective Vest M / 12.

Protective vest M / 12 will in the longer term replace the current fragmentation vest M / 00 and combat vest M / 05 as well as parts of the Recycling system M / 96.

The legacy is then expected to be used in the basic education of the armed forces in the various guards, including the Home Guard.

The Armed Forces have given priority to the rapid deployment of the new vest, and therefore there will be a transition period of about 12-18 months before the remaining part of the many accessory and equipment bags used by the soldiers today can also be delivered in Multicam. This means that at the first units receiving the new vest, there will be a mix of Multicam and the current green blur patterns.
