MOLLE Evolves for the Army and is Replaced by the USMC

Based on user feedback on the original system, the MOLLE requirements were modified to eliminate the need for a quick-release frame that integrates into the load-bearing vest. The change allowed developers to replace the probe and socket mechanism, which caused problems for some soldiers and Marines, with a quick-release mechanism for a more traditional permanently-mounted waist belt on the frame.

In Afghanistan, troops noted that MOLLE zippers were bursting open when the bags were stuffed full. Another defect was that the straps weren't long enough to be easily adjusted over body armor such as PASGT or Interceptor. MOLLE was changed to provide locking zippers and longer shoulder straps.

The Marine Corps was not satisficed by the evolution of MOLLE and has replaced MOLLE (and the aging ALICE (All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) with the Improved Load Bearing Equipment (ILBE).

MOLLE II Modifications

Field user feedback on the original MOLLE led to modified designs to some of the MOLLE components. With these changes, MOLLE became MOLLE II. Specific changes included:

  • Eliminated the quick-release frame integrated into the load bearing vest (LBV)
  • The probe and socket mechanism changed to a quick-release mechanism for frame waist belt, now permanently-mounted to the frame
  • MOLLE II permanently attached waistbelt comes in one size (Same NSN as the MOLLE size small waistbelt, NSN 8465-01-465-2109)
  • MOLLE LBV redesigned to eliminate the molded waistbelt, called the MOLLE II Fighting Load Carrier (FLC) (Same NSN as the MOLLE LBV. NSN 8465-01-465-2056)
  • MOLLE Utility Belt (NSN 8465-01-465-2082) eliminated by building the functionality into the vest
  • MOLLE butt pack replaced by the MOLLE II waist pack (Same NSN)
  • MOLLE II Pouch, Canteen Carrier/Utility was introduced (NSN 8465-01-484-0450)

Modular MOLLE


MOLLE is an Army and Marine Corps item that replaces the aging ALICE (All-purpose, Lightweight, Individual Carrying Equipment) pack and Integrated Individual Fighting System introduced in 1988. Soldiers and Marines took a survey in 1996 resulting in a project to design a load-carrying system that’s modular, durable and comfortable, which led to the MOLLE.

Your Central Issue Facility or Supply should issue a complete MOLLE set with the appropriate pockets to match your squad position.

The MOLLE system consists of the fighting load vest, the main rucksack, the sleep system carrier, the patrol pack, the frame, sustainment pockets, six foot lashing straps, hydration bladder, repair kit, and additional pockets.

Every vest regardless of duty position also comes with a utility pouch attached to the belt. The rucksack and shoulder straps come pre-assembled to the frame. The other components are provided as add ons that can be attached by the individual soldier or marine as needed. The MOLLE system provides far more load carrying capabilities than the ALICE and other fielded systems. However, proper new equipment training is required in order for the system to be used to its maximum capabilities. These capabilities are illustrated to assist soldiers and marines with familiarization of the system. The vest modularity allows for commanders to tailor the loads to meet mission needs without unnecessary extra pockets and gear. The vest is designed to reduce heat build up on the back with minimum area of coverage with the H-Harness design. The wide shoulder straps of the vest help distribute the load without the need for excessive padding that can hinder mobility and sighting a weapon.

I am only going to cover the original 1997 issued Molle system here. It is in this configuration it is rarely seen. This is for several reasons. In 1998 the Interceptor vest was issued. This had the attachment webbing on it allready for the MOLLE pouch, so mostly the pouches were just added to that. Another reason was low budgets of the military during this era. Moreover, Molle II was issued in very late 2000. Many of the pre 2001 MOLLE NSNs were revised and issued in MOLLE II. Lastly, in late 2001, the MOLLE II system came out in the Desert coffee stain camo. What I want here to do is I want to describe here the ORIGINAL MOLLE system, in woodland camo, as it was rarely seen


In this form the Vest and Belt were seperate. The vest was designed to be common to all setups. Unlike MOLLE II, the belt was a seperatable item. There were a couple of different belts. One, made in three sizes, was a molded belt made to work with the rucksack. The other was a utility belt with no rucksack capabillity. The various pouches, some of which directly of the type on the IIFS vest, were to be used in various setups. Indeed the various setups were made pre bagged with an overall NSN for that set. The rucksack was integrated into the system and made less seperate. The molded belt had a socket on the back the rucksack was to insert into. This proved less then sucessfull as the male socket part on the rucksack would often miss the socket and injure the back of the wearer.
