USMC ILBE Gregory Prototype UM21 Woodland Rucksack with Assault Pack Set

History

ILBE developed from U.S. Marine Corps dissatisfaction with the MOLLE Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment. Evolutionary changes in MOLLE were not sufficient to meet Marines' requirements, so in 2003 the USMC investigated two new pack designs to upgrade the MOLLE in response to complaints about the original version. The selected designs were provided by commercial vendors Bianchi (Gregory) and Propper International (Arc'teryx).

This Pack is a Rare UM21 Style Backpack System That was provided to the USMC to be Considered for use as the ILBE.The Marine Corps Selected the Arcteryx / propper Model Instead.

ILBE ASSAULT PACK
NSN: 8465-01-515-8615

The Improved Load Bearing System (ILBE) backpack was created for use by the United States Marine Corps based on feedback received during initial combat situations that took place during the first US involvement in Iraq. The system was created by Arcteryx Law Enforcement and Armed Forces (LEAF) program and was intended to replace the ALICE and MOLLE systems currently in use.

Arc’teryx used the noted design flaws in the previous two systems to create a more efficient load bearing pack without increasing the volume of the pack and maneuverability it allowed for. The ILBE system consists of three main parts, the Main Pack, the Hydration System, and the Assault Pack.

Marine Corps MARPAT ILBE Assault Pack. The Improved Load Bearing Equipment (ILBE) Assault Pack is made from Cordura 725 fabric in MARPAT (MARine PATtern) Digital Camouflage. The standard measurements for the Assault Pack are approximately 6" deep, 12" wide, and 18" tall for main compartment and the outer pocket is 2" deep, 10" wide and 14" high. Its standalone capacity is 1,500 inches of cubic space with a load capacity of 25 to 40 pounds.

It has two separate storage compartments as well as an inner pocket. The inner pocket is designed to house the ILBE Hydration System (sold separately) and the tube feeds through either the left or right open flap at the top of the pack. Features Pouch Attachment Ladder System (PALS) grid which allows various items to be attached externally to the pack.

The Assault Pack also has a removable plastic panel that provides extra support as well as a padded back panel for extra comfort. The pack is equipped with two quick release padded shoulder straps that feature a sternum strap and a self-storing 2" wide waist belt with a quick release buckle.
