The M58 Flachtarnenmuster pattern was issued between 1956 and 1967 to units in the East German Army (NVA) and Ministry of Interior (MDI). Also known as Kartoffelmuster (potato camouflage) or Blumentarn (flower camouflage), the pattern generally consists of blue-green, olive green & brown ragged blotches on a field grey background. Several mild color variations have been documented, some of which may appear darker due to their having been coated in anti-gas chemicals (which also gave the fabric a waxy texture). Several types of jacket, trousers, field equipment, shelter half and hood/helmet cover were produced in this pattern.

Produced between 1965 and 1968, and in use for several years thereafter, the first type Strichmuster (line pattern) is a very simple pattern incorporating long, slender brown rain straits on a light greyish-green background. The "rain" theme was common with many Warsaw Pact nations (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria) and was probably influenced by WW2 German designs such as Splittermuster and Sumpftarn. This is generally referred to as 1st Type East German strichtarn.

The NVA M85 FELDFLASCHE UTV ISOLIER

German N.V.A. UTV Canteen M85 di Army Water Bottles and Mess Kits Collection
Known as: NVA FELDFLASCHE UTV ISOLIER M85

This is the last in a series of canteens issued by the German Democratic Republic (DDR) for the army or National Volksarmee and other departments such as the Border Guards and the Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse, (KG d. AKL - Fighting Groups of the Working Class 1949-1990) after the 1950’s. This canteen formed part of the Field Service Uniform wearing clothing of trial of 85-90 or Uniformtrageversuches (UTV) and so this is the last canteen issued for the East German Armed Forces before they were disbanded in 1990.
The M85 Feldflasche UTV Isolier is basically a larger model of the original plastic canteen which was first employed in the 1960’s when it replaced the previous aluminium canteen issued in the 1950’s. The same bottle, but with a Blumentarn cover, and later with a Strichtarn cover, was employed in the 1960’s and the 1980’s. As with most of the world's militaries, there was a move toward smooth, synthetic, impermeable, and easy to clean materials during the late 1960's due to the perceived increasing risk of NBC warfare. Often hideous and clearly unprogressive nylon and vinyl replaced canvas and leather. The DDR made particularly extensive use of synthetic materials, and whilst it is true that decontamination considerations were a factor, the main reason may have been purely economic.
However this water bottle has some basic differences. First of all it has no fabric cover since it has a rubber thermal cover made of green Neoprene (soft thin rubber-like seal material often used in wetsuits). This cover not only guarantees that the contents remain cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather, but serves also as a protection, while its olive green colour does not need camouflage. Another feature which makes this bottle different from previous ones is its size. It holds up to 900cc of liquid. The harness, which keeps the same lines as the later models, is also different. It is made of synthetic leather like all the canteens issued after 1960. However it does not have a carabiner like earlier models but instead, it has a loop with which the bottle is attached to the owner’s webbing belt. Moreover a horizontal strip has also been included, thus making the bottle steadier in its harness.
The only feature which this canteen retained from older models is the cup. It has the same cup as the ones carried by its predecessors. In fact it seems that the M85 Feldflasche UTV Isolier was designed in such a way as to accommodate this type of cup. The cup has the same characteristics as those used so far and the only difference is a small detail in the rim. The cup is painted olive green instead of grey.
These NVA canteens were produced by PRETA (EBV Presswerk Tambach) which in the 1970’s became part of KOWALIT (Kombinat Waltershausen in Thüringen).
