GLOSSARY

A splint is defined as “a rigid or flexible device that maintains in position a displaced or movable part; also used to keep in place and protect an injured part” or as “a rigid or flexible material used to protect, immobilize, or restrict motion in a part.” Splints can be used for injuries that are not severe enough to immobilize the entire injured structure of the body. For instance, a splint can be used for certain fractures, soft tissue sprains, tendon injuries, or injuries awaiting orthopedic treatment. A splint may be static, not allowing motion, or dynamic, allowing controlled motion. Splints can also be used to relieve pain in damaged joints. Splints are quick and easy to apply and do not require a plastering technique. Splints are often made out of some kind of flexible material and a firm pole-like structure for stability. SUMMARY

Fenwal made these sets during the Korean War and Vietnam War.

US Army Medical Dept switched to a hypenated stock number mid to late 1945 and the FSN was introduced in 1949. Given the stock number does not have 000 as the last three digits and recognizing that some manufacturing contracts would have existed without the FSN, my opinion is those particular units could be 1946-early 1950 but definitely not beyond that. Definitely something that could have been used during the Korean War and early Vietnam as well.

Recently, the Moscow company Medplant began to produce a hemostatic tourniquet called LCD-01.

The tourniquet is a repairing regimen for temporary restoring of the bleeding in case of damage to the arterial vessels of the lower and upper extremities.

Advantages: The tourniquet provides uniform compression, dosed compression and does not damage the skin and tissues.
The design of the harness is simplified as much as possible, it can easily be applied alone with one hand, with minimal physical effort applied;
The time of laying the tourniquet is about 15 seconds;
The overlay time scale is convenient and easily visible in the dark;
The minimum weight and dimensions of the harness allow it to be placed in any individual first aid kit.

Method of application: The free end of the tape is threaded into the buckle and forms a loop for applying it to the limb, the loop is preliminarily tightened on the limbs and fixed with the Velcro fastener (a smooth surface of the tape should be attached to the patient's body). Then, using the lever of a protracted mechanism, the straps are wound on the coil axis and the cable is harnessed until the bleeding stops completely. Time is set on the timeline.

Hemostop - hemostatic agent, which is one of the new achievements of domestic pharmacology. The tool is primarily aimed at use in emergency and military medicine.


Hemostop pozvolyaet stop external bleeding of varying degrees of intensity, including when damaged large venous and arterial vessels. The product is effective for extensive wounds (scalped, chopped, torn, gunshot), and, most importantly, for neck, axillary, groin, and buttock injuries, i. Those areas where the use of harnesses does not stop bleeding.

The agent is a beige colorless granular polydisperse powder. Sterilization is carried out by the radiation method. The powder is packed in a sealed foil-paper bag.

Unlike similar gel means, it can be transported in the temperature range from minus 40 to plus 50 degrees. C, which is especially important for its use in the climatic conditions of Russia.


In its composition, the preparation is a derivative of NaCaAX zeolite, which has a high adsorption capacity. Hemostatic effect is based on rapid moisture absorption. Upon contact with blood, a large volume of water is selectively absorbed with respect to the mass and volume of the preparation, which leads to a local concentration of cellular and major protein components of the blood (including clotting factors). This, in turn, induces the formation of blood convolution.


In addition, the surface potential of the zeolite contributes to the activation of the XII clotting factor and platelets. The agent also contains calcium, which is a cofactor in many parts of the coagulation cascade.


When used, the powder easily fills the wound cavity, is not fixed to the tissues, is not absorbed, after application it is easily removed mechanically. Has no contraindications to use.
