History note Category
The Era of Scarcity (1948–1970s)
In its infancy, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) lacked standardized equipment. Soldiers utilized a "diverse and inconsistent" mix of surplus gear, including British Brodie helmets and canvas webbing, and French equipment from the 1950s. During this period, the focus was on basic functionality-carrying ammunition and water often using heavy, rigid materials that caused significant physical strain during long maneuvers.
