The Royal Netherlands Army was defeated in May 1940 and only began to rise again with the formation of the Princess Irene Brigade Group in exile. In the Far East, the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army was defeated by the Japanese in 1942; few elements managed to escape. Today's army grew out of the wartime force, starting with the liberation of parts of the Netherlands in 1944.

The army then fought in the Indonesian War of Independence 1945–1949, in Korea in 1950-53, and the war with Indonesia over New Guinea, 1960–1962. The Royal Netherlands Navy and an army battalion were sent to Korea between 1950 and 1954. In total, 3,972 Soldiers were sent to fight the war in Korea, 123 died in combat.

The I (Netherlands) Corps stood watch alongside its NATO allies in Germany during the Cold War. The corps consisted of three divisions during the 1980s, the 1st, 4th, and 5th (reserve) divisions. It was part of the NATO Northern Army Group.

The new Dutch armed forces Individueel Soldaat Systeem (ISS) in the new NFP colorways will include a modular combat equipment system known as the Verbeterd Operationeel Soldaat Systeem (VOSS) and a new clothing system called the Defensie Operationeel Kleding System (DOKS).

Now commonly referred to as M19 NFP (Netherlands Fractal Pattern), the family would include NFP-Green for verdant environments, NFP-Tan for arid ones, NFP-Navy for on-board ship use, and NFP-Arctic for snow-covered environments. There is also a 5th colorway called NFP-Multitone which is used for individual combat and load-carrying gear. For a great up-close look at the 3 main patterns, as well as the gear and uniforms that have been issued thus far, check out this article by our friends at JointForces.com

VOSS stands for Verbeterd Operationeel Soldaat Systeem (Improved Operational Soldier System), the new individual soldier system of the Royal Netherlands Army, and NFP stands for Netherlands Fractal Pattern, the modern camouflage pattern it uses. VOSS is a modular system that includes a carrying system, load-carrying gear, and a battle belt. It is part of the larger Dutch military's Individueel Soldaat Systeem (ISS) and is designed to replace older equipment. VOSS (Verbeterd Operationeel Soldaat Systeem): This is the Dutch term for "Improved Operational Soldier System." It refers to the comprehensive personal equipment and carrying system for Dutch soldiers.

NFP (Netherlands Fractal Pattern): This is the modern camouflage pattern that the VOSS gear is produced in. It was designed to be effective in various environments and replaces previous camouflage patterns like Dutch DPM.
