Historically, pioneers, infantry and cavalry mostly worked with long spades, shovels, pickaxes, hatchet picks, hand hatchets and saws. Short-handled field spades came into use from 1870 and folding spades from 1938. Today, the technical troops and the artillery have mechanized or long-stemmed entrenchments on their vehicles.
