It's Velcro loop lined so that the mesh pouches can be arranged within. These have a wide strip of Velcro hook on their back for the purpose.
ReplyDeleteThis is in fantastic condition - but it's been modified. The folding Red Cross emblem has been removed: when displaying the Red Cross, this would be retained in the open position using the horizontal 20mm Velcro loop at the lower front of the pack. The emblem folds closed to hide the red/white emblem, showing only its DPM side.
A vertical 25mm by ~50mm patch of Velcro loop has been sewn onto the right lower front of the pack for some unknown reason. Because its position would have overlapped the Red Cross, the previous owner had removed it. It's conceivable that they idea was to attach a mesh pouch to the outside - but being held in place only by Velcro, it wouldn't have been secure.
