This is a : SADF Water Bottle 2 Litre
Description
Thanks to : Tales from the Supply Depot
At the start of the 1980s the SADF introduced a new plastic waterbottle in anticipation of their 1983 pattern load bearing equipment. With water being such an essential element of operations in South West Africa, the new bottles had a 2L capacity compared with the older 1L bottles. They were rectangular in shape and initially produced in nutria brown plastic to complement the webbing and uniform in service at the time (later green plastic was also used). A couple of strengthening ribs were moulded into each side of the bottle:
The pattern 83 webbing/battle jacket had two pouches on the side for these 2l bottles. Plus you could keep an extra in the top back pouch. I have quite a few of these and they have a tendency to break or leak along the seams, at least that’s my experience.
M Ashley Adams explains the different colours in service:
I have seen these in light green, dark green and brown. I was issued with dark green ones 1987, in 1988 when I was attached to 32 Bn, I was issued brown ones.
