Description

Physical description

Three-piece assembly of mess tins, made of aluminium and painted olive green but blackened, based on the German design and comprising a kidney-shaped pot with wire carring handle, fitted dish, and lid. The lid could also be used for cooking and eating from and has a fiold down handle, used to secure the ensemble closed when not in use.

History note

The Second World War Japanese soldier's basic personal equipment consisted of a leather belt, two rifle ammunition pouches with a 30 round capacity each, a reserve pouch (containing 60 rounds and an oil bottle) fitted to the rear, bayonet and frog, 2 1/2 pint (1.2 Litre) capacity waterbottle, mess tins, haversack, entrenching tool, knapsack and gas mask. As the war progressed and supplies of materials became scarce, the belt, bayonet frog and pouches previously made of leather were later replaced by those made of rubberized canvas from 1943. These mess tins, of German influence, were used for both cooking in and eating from.
