Purpose

History

The M17 Protective Mask is a series of gas masks that were designed and produced in 1959 (as a replacement of the M-9 gas mask) to provide protection from all types of knownchemical and biological agents present.The M-17 was issued to troops in the Vietnam war, and was standard issue for the U.S Army until it was replaced by the M-40 in the late 1980s and early 1990s

These protective masks have inbuilt systems that facilitate communication, a tube for drinking water (A1 / A2), and a pair of outserts to protect eye lenses and prevent fogging. M17 - first .M17A1 - added drinking tube to consume water while wearing.

M17A2 - a smaller size was introduced, so they changed the name. that is the only difference. current issue. The drinking tube was added to the M17A1 in 1966. the name was changed to M17A2 in 1983. The drinking tube was around long before the A2 was.

In 1966 the M-17A1 protective mask was introduced, which had an integral drinking tube. The cap of the M1961 canteen was changed to an NBC cap by the addition of a small connecting hole in the center of the cap with a cover that snapped into place. Replacement NBC caps, called the M1 cap, were issued for older canteens then in use, first in black then olive green.

Army Mil-Spec NBC Cap with valve system for hydration while wearing military Gas masks.
