US ENAMEL CANTEEN 1942 VOLLRATH
Military Porcelain Enamel Canteen











World War II Military Black Porcelain Enamel Canteen.

Military issue enamel canteen was dispensed to troops for only a portion of 1942. It replaced the previous canteens which were made of aluminum or stainless steel. Those metals were in high demand for the war effort for manufacture of aircraft and other essentials. The enamel canteen proved unpopular among the troops because the porcelain chipped easily and the water could become contaminated by either glass pieces or the rusty metal which became exposed. The military replaced it with the original canteen by the end of 1942. This canteen has minimal chipping and is missing the original cap. A soldier must have improvised and used the attached cork to seal the top.
The canteen measures 4-1/2" x 8".
